Largest gift in UNCG history invests in generations of educators

Last month I was on assignment for UNCG to capture a very special event and building unveiling for the school of education on campus. Harriet Shain Evenson, class of 1953, gifted the largest donation in the school's history coming in over $13 million!

Harriet Shain Evenson ’53 built her legacy around a simple charge: Make more teachers. Her lifelong commitment to public education – shared with her husband, Jerome – culminated in the largest gift in UNCG history, one that will transform the School of Education beyond her expectations.

Her estate gift, totaling more than $13 million, will significantly strengthen the Harriet Shain & Jerome Evenson Endowed Scholarship in Education, created two decades ago, and will establish the Jerome Evenson Distinguished Professorship in Artificial Intelligence in Education, ensuring that future educators are prepared to lead in our rapidly evolving world.

In recognition of this extraordinary dedication to the University and unwavering belief in education, UNCG has announced a new naming: The Harriet Shain and Jerome Evenson School of Education Building. - UNCG.edu

I have had the pleasure of working with the special events team at UNCG for almost 15 years now and continue to provide photo coverage for their most important special events, annual meetings, executive headshots and more.

This ribbon cutting / building unveiling was most definitely a historic event for the school of education and was a total surprise to the university a few months ago when they were notified of this amazing gift from the family's estate attorney.

“The Evensons’ investment is deeply powerful,” says Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. “It strengthens UNCG’s enduring commitment to preparing outstanding educators and positions our School of Education as a leader in emerging disciplines that are shaping the future of teaching and learning.” - UNCG.edu
